Electronic Governance
Overview >>
With its assurances of enhanced transparency, accountability, expediency and efficiency, technology-aided-governance or e-governance promises to trigger a foundational reorientation in the state’s approach towards its citizenry. Administration in India so far has been conducted to best serve the interests of the administration. In part this problem was due to the mammoth demographics involved which would often act as the bottleneck frustrating the otherwise benevolent intentions of the state. With the appropriate use of information technology, however, this problem can now be practically overcome. However this still leaves issues of converting the mindset of the administration looming largely unaddressed.
While the tone of much of the discourse surrounding electronic governance has ranged from the wildly messianic to the dismal Orwellian, the TLF attempts to chart a via media here. By engaging both with businesses offering e-governance solutions and with state bureaucratic departments, we aim to theorize on models of electronic governance suited to Indian needs and which adequately squares locally limiting factors.
