Biotechnology
Overview >>
The Life Science Industry owes its development to scientific and technological progresses made by biotechnology in the late 20th century. The successful experiments in North America and Europe of genetically modified crops in Agriculture and genetically modified organisms (GMO) for research in human and animal diseases indicate the significance of the biotechnology industry today in the west.
Its success is accompanied with various issues in environment law like human health, food safety and environment hazards which form a major part of the environmental jurisprudence today. Patenting of biotechnological inventions is one of the most controversial areas in intellectual property law today. As the definitions of ‘inventions’ and ‘life’ are getting redefined everyday the legislatures are finding themselves faced with too many unresolved philosophical issues underlying various debates around biotechnology. The creation of various new categories which are by their nature difficult to regulate and legislate upon due to various unresolved policy choices has led to haphazard and controversial legislations.
This group will primarily keep a track of various legal developments that biotechnology is driving in various areas and also develop critical research around the substantial issues involved.
